Mudhens Go 3-1 at Sir G's Tourney in Ely
Posted July 11, 2017
For years the legion tournaments held annually in Ely, MN have beckoned the BOLD Mudhens to the baseball crazy north woods. In 2017 the stars finally aligned and the trip became a reality. But how would the locals fare against some of the top teams from northern Minnesota, the twin cities area, and even Canada? If the results of the 2017 Sir G's tournament is any indication, the answer to that question is, just fine, thank you.
The team finished pool play at 2-1 which put them in a three-way tie for first place with Cloquet and Stephen-Argyle. All three of these teams defeated Thunder Bay, Ontario handily. BOLD knocked off Cloquet (a AAA high school) by a 7-3 score but then fell hard 12-2 to Stephen-Argyle who was threw their ace, a freshman pitcher at UM Crookston (and teammate of BOLD Assistant Coach Wyatt Peppel). The final standings in the pool were determined by the first tiebreaker rule which was runs allowed. Cloquet was awarded first place and advanced to the champioship pool where they lost in the first round. Stephen-Argyle took second in the pool and went on to defeat Ely in the 5th place game. BOLD raised their record to 3-1 for the weekend with a 6-2 win over Dodge Center for 7th place.
