2016 Mudhens Finish Just Short Of State Tourney Goal
Posted July 25, 2016
The 2016 BOLD Mudhens knew when the season began that a return trip to the State Division 2 Legion Tournament would be a lofty goal. Standing in the way in Sub-District play were teams such as Tritown with much of their roster back, NLS who is always competitive, Litchfield who just moved down to division 2, and Fairfax whose high school team went deep into their AA Sections in school ball. But BOLD was the most consistent team of all in league play losing just one league game (1-0 in Atwater) to win the East Sub District title.
The Mudhens were seeded 2nd in the East playoffs and suffered their second loss to Tritown in the winner's bracket final game. This year that the East Sub-District could send two teams to the District 7 Final Four (this extra team will rotate around the other three sub districts in the future) and BOLD took advantage. A win over Litchfield in the consolation final game in Spicer earned BOLD a 5th straight trip to the District 7 Final Four in Montevideo (6th in the last 7 years).
Glenwood-Lowry was the first oppponent for BOLD in the tourney. This was repeat match-up of the 2015 first round game. In 2015 BOLD won this opening game only to see G-L battle back through the losers bracket to the final game of the tournament. In 2016, the roles were reversed and G-L was returning almost their entire line-up from 2015. G-L won the opening game 5-3, and this time it was the Mudhens who would win their way back to the title game on Saturday. Along the way they defeated Cottonwood 8-1 and Tritown 10-9.
Despite outhitting G-L 7-5 in the final game, and a gutty performance by BOLD senior to be Reed Stadther, the Mudhens could not complete the comeback falling by a 3-0 score to G-L. Congratulations to Glenwood Lowry who will represent District 7 in the State Division 2 tournament beginning Friday, July 29 in LeSeuer-Henderson.
